Truck catches fire on Corentyne highway after blowout

A truck that was transporting laterite soil caught fire along the Number 62, Village, Corentyne Public Road yesterday after a tyre blowout.

According to information gathered, around midday the driver of the truck, GYY 6066, was proceeding to New Amsterdam from Number 63 Village, Corentyne, when the driver’s side front tyre suffered a blowout, which sparked the fire.

One of the brake lines reportedly caught alight, causing the fire to spread faster.

The driver was able to escape after which the Fire Service was summoned and firefighters quickly put out the blaze.

Losses as a result of the fire damage were estimated to be around $9 million, this newspaper was told.
