Gov’t to fund construction of buildings for call centres

With the aim of creating 1,500 jobs by 2023, government will be investing in the construction of two buildings to house call centres, Minister of Finance Dr Ashni Singh announced on Wednesday.

Singh, during his 2022 budget presentation to the National Assembly, said the growth of the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry has created approximately 1,131 jobs between August 2020 and the end of 2021.

Within the last year, he noted, government has partnered with a private operator and reopened a call centre in Linden that now provides 125 persons with jobs. It is anticipated that a further 100 persons will be employed there by June of this year.

Singh last year lauded the efforts of Malcolm Sobers, the Chief Executive Officer of Midas BPO Inc., the telemarketing company that went into operation last year.

Sobers, a Guyanese with 20 years of experience in the sector, currently operates in both Belize and Guyana. In addition to Linden, Midas has branches at Grove, East Bank Demerara as well as at Lombard Street, Georgetown.

Singh visited BPO centres across the country in 2021 and he said the government intends to continue working with the sector to ensure its continued growth, as this will allow for the creation of thousands of jobs and the generation of income for many families.
