Wismar woman, 97, loses home to fire

A 97-year-old woman, Marvernie Brewley of Lot 55 First Alley, Wismar, Region Ten is now homeless after her house went up in flames yesterday morning.

She was at the time living with her son Joel Brewley who was not at home when the fire started at around 11:20 am.

Her great grandson, Nicklous Hinckson said he had gone to visit his great grandmother when he noticed smoke coming from his uncle’s room. In panic he immediately shouted “fire” and raised an alarm. 

Relatives and neighbours immediately removed Marvernie from the one-storey wooden house which had already been engulfed in flames. 

Fire-fighters and the police were informed but by the time they arrived the entire house had been gutted.

“We are happy that granny is alive, her son live with her but was not at home at the time and we try to rush her house, she came out unhurt”, a relative said. 

The room where the fire started had groceries, a freezer and a television set. Other items that were lost in the fire include beds, mattresses, music systems, television sets, clothes and chair sets amongst other things. 

Marvernie will be staying with her daughter until they can rebuild. Anyone desirous of helping can contact relatives at 442-1156 or 657-9750.
