Corriverton fisherman missing after reportedly falling overboard

As of yesterday afternoon, the search was continuing for a Corriverton fisherman who reportedly fell overboard while fishing in the Corentyne River in the vicinity of Orealla on Sunday.

Missing is Shunny Jagessar, 42, a fisherman of Albert Street, Corriverton. The incident is said to have occurred sometime around 2 pm.

According to information gathered, Shunny and another fisherman, Rajesh Moses, 50, of Lot 1 ‘A’ Number 79 Village, Springlands, departed the Springlands foreshore in a wooden vessel en route to Orealla Village to fish on Sunday around 9 am.

Stabroek News was told that Moses informed the police that around 2 pm they were on the eastern side of the riverbank fishing – he was at the bow area while Shunny was at the back of the boat driving – when suddenly he heard a splash in the water.

Upon looking over he claimed to have noticed Shunny in the water after which he “went down.”

Moses told investigators that he made several checks for Shunny but after he did not find him he immediately contacted the police.

This newspaper was informed that Lance Corporal Rohit and a party of police immediately ventured to the location where they carried out multiple searches for the missing man but were unable to find him.
