Guyana’s rugby team’s mission this weekend could not clearer.

The national ruggers will compete at the Rugby America’s North (RAN) Sevens Championship in Nassau, The Bahamas with hopes of capturing their eighth title and qualifying for world class tournaments later in 2022.

The event is a qualifier for the 2022 Rugby Sevens World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa in September while members of the British Commonwealth will also be playing for places at the 2022 Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, England in July.

The men and women’s champions as well as the runners-up will qualify for the 2022 Rugby Sevens World Cup. The top-placed men’s team from the British Commonwealth will qualify for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. That team will join the pre-qualified Canada in Birmingham.

To secure a spot, the side which is skippered by Jamal Angus, will first face Curacao today at 11:56h. The ‘Green Machine’ will then face their toughest test, defending champion and nemesis, Jamaica from 15:14h. Their final group match is against the hosts from 18:54h.

Knockout and placement games are scheduled for tomorrow.

A lot is on the line during this year’s fixture being staged at the Thomas Robinson Stadium.

The 13-man roster reads: Jamal Angus, Godfrey Broomes, Tyrese Prescod, Avery Corbin, Michael Barrow, Michael Edwards, Lancelot Adonis, Owen Adonis, Peabo Hamilton, Rickford Cummings, Lionel Holder, Vallon Adams and Matthew Talbot.
