Man dies after highway accident

A man died following an accident in the vicinity of Splashmins Resort along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway at about 5.30 am yesterday.

The dead man is yet to be identified.

According to the police, the accident involved an unknown male, and motor lorry GAB 1668 owned by 23-year-old Mark Forrester and driven at the time by Orael Davis, 28, of Mackenzie, Linden.

Enquiries revealed that the lorry was proceeding north, along the western side of the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, when the man who was said to be sitting on a tyre on the western side of the road, suddenly ran on to the road and into the path of the lorry.

The driver of the vehicle applied brakes but was unable to avoid hitting the man. He was picked up in an unconscious state by the police and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The  body was then escorted to Carmen’s Funeral Home for storage where it is currently awaiting identification and a post-mortem examination.

A Breathalyzer test was later conducted on the driver of the motor lorry but no trace of alcohol was found in his system.

The driver is said to be in custody assisting with the investigation.
