Demerara women romp to 89-run win

Demerara women opened the Guyana Cricket Board senior women’s Inter County T20 tournament with an 89-run win over the  Select XI while Berbice eased to a nine-wicket win over Essequibo yesterday at the Albion Community Centre Ground, Berbice.

Demerara won the toss and opted to bat first where they posted 139 for five from their allotted overs. In reply, the Select XI were routed for 50 in 19.1 overs.

A captain’s innings from West Indies Women’s team all-rounder, Cherry-Ann Fraser, led the way for Demerara as she made 46 from 41 balls. Her innings featured six boundaries before ending via run out. Her fellow West Indies Women’s team mate, Mandy Mangru got Demerara off to a solid start with a 30-ball 21 while sharing in a 41-run opening stand with Latoya Smith who made 20 from 34 balls.

No other batter reached double figures but extras chalked up 35 towards the total, 20 of which came from wides.

Nirveena Ramnauth was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2-24 while Kimberly Sookdeo and Renata Liverpool bagged one wicket each.

The Select XI’s chase was curtailed by Litesha Jordan who picked up four wickets for seven runs including a hat-trick,  accounting for Kareema Smith, Ramnauth and Fenelia Narine. She was supported by left-arm spinner, Kaysia Schultz (3-11) and Shameka Edwards (2-4).

Extras accounted for 20 while Realanna Grimmond was the only batter to reach double figures with 14 from 40 balls before being trapped leg before wicket by Schultz.

Meanwhile, in the second match, Essequibo women won the toss and decided to bat but were bundled out for a paltry 30 from 13.5 overs. Berbice, in reply, raced to 32 for one in 4.3 overs.

Of the  Essquibo women’s meagre total, only nine runs came off the bat and no player passed four. Ashmini Munisar (2-1), Plaffina Millington (2-4) and Dian Prahald (2-8) shared the wickets for Berbice.

Essequibo aided the chase by gifting Berbice 10 extras while Shabika Gajnabi piloted the  side with an unbeaten 13-ball 14. Analesia D’Aguiar (1-15) was the successful bowler, bowling Shenetta Grimmond for two.
