A Corentyne man who was released three weeks ago from the New Amsterdam Prison was yesterday morning found dead with severe chop injuries about his body in an empty lot at Number 55 Village, Corentyne.

Akash Pechia, 22, of Number 50 Village, Corentyne, was found with chop injuries to his neck, back, and wrist.

As of yesterday afternoon, Pechia’s cousin and a friend were in custody for questioning as they were the last persons seen with him.

A crowd gathered at the scene

According to information gathered, Pechia and several friends were last seen imbibing around 3.30 pm on Monday at the Number 50 bus shed.

Diane Pechia, a cousin of the deceased explained, that around 7 am yesterday her brother (detained for questioning) informed her that Pechia’s body had been  found with chop injuries at the location. She said that he told her he saw it in a post on Facebook, and after she checked she confirmed that it was indeed their cousin’s body.

She said her brother and his friend who would often hang out with Pechia rushed over to the scene where they were eventually detained for questioning after which she arrived.

Residents in the area yesterday explained, that they did not see much as there was heavy rain throughout the evening.

A police source yesterday told Stabroek News that they are working on the theory that Pechia was attacked by a group of men.

In August, 2021, Pechia made news after he escaped from the Number 51 Police Station while in custody on a simple larceny and theft charge. He had reportedly broken into a store and stolen several items at Number 47 Village, Corentyne.

He was later arrested in Springlands, Corentyne and charged.

Diane yesterday related that after the man was released from prison about three weeks ago, she encouraged him to stay out of trouble. “He always a get lock up for thieve and he always a go jail and come out back and three days ago he come by me and me deh tell he na walk late and stay home.”

She recalled, that Pechia  informed her during his visit to her residence at Number 47 Village, Corentyne, that an ex-convict from Skeldon whom he spent time in jail with was looking for him. “He tell me how this boy and he went prison and the boy looking for he and threatening that he go kill him and that the boy even beat up one a he friend and a ask for he.”

She said that Pechia did not mention why the man was supposedly searching for him.

Pechia resided between his grandfather’s and uncle’s houses.
