The restoration works on the historic City Hall building are moving apace and are on schedule,  according to Deputy Mayor of Georgetown, Alfred Mentore.

Mentore on Thursday told Stabroek News that he is pleased with the progress that he saw while he was on a visit to the building with a party of city councillors.

He also said that due to COVID, the Trinidadian construction company, Fides Ltd is still in the process of importing more materials for the renovation.

“…The Trinidadian Company…due to COVID they still have some materials to import, but so far the process is going fine and the contractors of the company and our engineer who went to visit also said that they are on time with it…”

He added: “… they are not working on one specific part of the building, they are all over, they are trying to get rid of certain rotten parts and trying to fix it at the same time, ” said the Deputy Mayor.

In a Facebook post, the Mayor of Georgetown, Ubraj Narine also expressed his satisfaction at the ongoing restoration works.

In January of this year, one of the Project Managers, Ramnarace Somar, had told this newspaper that the company wished to complete the construction within 12 months although they were initially given an 18-month time frame.

In September last year, a contract worth $780 million for the restoration of the building  was signed with Fides Ltd.  The rehabilitation is being funded by the government.
