A four-wicket haul from out-of-favour West Indies Women all-rounder, Tremayne Smartt, sealed a 10-wicket win for Berbice Women over Select XI in the Guyana Cricket Board senior female 50-over inter-county tournament yesterday.

Playing at National Stadium, Providence, after early showers, Select XI won the toss and decided to bat but were bundled out for a paltry 40 in 17 overs. Berbice in reply, needed just 4.1 overs to reach 41 without loss.

Smartt was too crafty for the young side and in the end returned four wickets for just three runs. The 36-year-old seamer who represented West Indies in 57 Women’s One Day Internationals and 58 Women’s T20 Internationals was supported by off-spinners, Ashmini Munisar, and Shenetta Grimmond, with two wickets each. Plaffina Millington also got among the wickets by bowling Crystal Durant.

Half of Select XI’s total came in extras as only Niveena Ramnauth was left on 12 not out from 22 balls. She was the only batter to reach double figures as seven batters failed to get off the mark.

Grimmond returned to lead the chase and smashed a six and three fours during her 13-ball 24 not out. At the other end, Katana Mentore also stroked two boundaries on her way to 16 not out from 12 balls.

The tournament continues today with Select XI battling Essequibo at the National Stadium.
