Woman arrested after allegedly attempting to ship cocaine in religious items

A 23-year-old woman was arrested by the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) on Tuesday after a package she allegedly shipped was intercepted with 540 grams of cocaine.

According to CANU, Lisa Ramnarine of Hague, West Coast Demerara (WCD) attempted to ship several items use in Hindu rituals via DHL where the drugs was discovered.

The anti-narcotic unit said that its officers, acting on information, intercepted the parcel at DHL’s 50 E Fifth Street, Alberttown headquarters on Monday. The illegal drug was discovered in a hidden compartment within a havan kund.

An examination of the package led the officers to Ramnarine – who was listed as the sender.

CANU said she was arrested and taken to its headquarters where the item was dismantled in her presence and the drug tested.

Investigations are ongoing.
