Police to seek legal advice over raid on businessmen’s party

The Police are moving to seek legal advice and institute charges against the three persons suspected to be involved in the robbery committed on eight businessmen at LBI last Tuesday.

Police Commander of Region 4 ‘C’ division Khali Pareshram last night told Stabroek News that they will be seeking legal advice today. The suspects remain in police custody.

A Guyana Police Force (GPF) statement said that the robbery occurred at 1.30 am on Tuesday at Fourth Street, La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara (ECD).

The victims were robbed of 5 cellphones, 2 laptops, 3 gold rings, and 3 gold chains worth millions, in addition to one black bag and an undisclosed amount of cash.

It is believed that the robbery was an inside job.

The businessmen were identified as 36-year-old Michael Kunjbehari of Fourth Street, Turkeyen, Georgetown; Robin Satrohan, 32, of Cummings Lodge, Greater Georgetown; Ryan Jahurali, 30, of Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara; 36-year-old Everton Singh-Lammy of Kitty; John Ali of Prashad Nagar; Mario Joseph, 31, of Well Road, Ogle, East Coast Demerara; 27-year-old Ramsammy (only name given), a Canadian citizen and Anthony Joseph, 32, of Fourth Street, Alexander Village, Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

According to the GPF, enquiries disclosed that the businessmen, along with five other friends were at Fourth Street, LBI, celebrating a birthday.

Subsequently, four males, armed with guns, entered the house through an unlocked backdoor and relieved the victims of the above-mentioned articles and a large amount of cash. They then escaped in a waiting car.

The matter was then reported to the police and the scene was visited where it was photographed and the area was canvassed for CCTV cameras.

One of the victims tracked his phone to an abandoned house in Plum Park, Sophia, Georgetown, where a red Digicel bag was found containing the two laptops, three cellphones and an ID card.

The bag was then taken to the Beterverwagting Police Station where it was also photographed and dusted for fingerprints.

Ranks from the Vigilance Police Station acting on information received then went to a house in North Melanie, ECD, at about 6 am on the morning of the raid, where three suspects were apprehended and taken to the Beterverwagting police station and placed into custody.

They were then identified by the businessmen as the perpetrators.  There has been no update on the location of the fourth suspect.

One of the victims, Singh-Lammy, told Stabroek News that at the time of the robbery, they were at the bottom flat of a building when four men with guns barged into the house and relieved them of their personal items.

“Well we were at a party and eventually four men with guns came into the building and robbed us.”

Singh-Lammy also noted that one of the perpetrators was not masked, while the others were partially masked.
