A man was chopped to death at De Kinderen early yesterday morning after he attacked a Venezuelan woman.

Lindsford Kenwayne Duguid, 34, who reportedly shared a relationship with the woman  was chopped to death during an attack by three persons.

The Police in a statement said that the fatal attack occurred at De Kinderen Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara between 3 am and 3:45 am yesterday.

On Saturday night at around 10 pm, police said, Duguid visited a home in the Scheme in search of the 22-year-old Venezuelan. However, he was informed by the landlord that the woman was not at home.

The landlord told police that at about 3.30 am, he heard loud screams emanating from his yard and upon enquiring he  saw Duguid pulling the woman  by her hair. At the same time, he told the police that one of the suspects (another female Venezuelan national) held on to Duguid’s waist from the back.

The landlord said he then rushed to the area and saw Duguid and two of the suspects fighting in a drain. One of the suspects had a knife in her hand. That suspect was stabbing at Duguid’s leg and a male Venezuelan suspect was holding Duguid around his neck.

Minutes later the third suspect appeared with a cutlass in his hand and began to chop Duguid about his body. One suspect was heard asking for a rope and the other suspect reportedly tied Duguid’s legs with same, the police said.

Duguid’s body was later removed from the drain where injuries were seen, examined and documented, the police said. Duguid’s body bore multiple chops to his head and a rope was tied around his legs and neck.

Chop wounds were seen on the left and right fingers and hand, injuries were also seen on the deceased man’s chest (four stabs) and right leg (three stabs).

As of yesterday afternoon, police were searching for the three suspects.

When Stabroek News visited the scene, it remained cordoned off. Neighbours were shocked to learn what had transpired. Some said they only learnt of the tragedy at daybreak and observed the presence of police in the area.

One neighbour told Stabroek News that he was awakened by the commotion.

“I wake hearing this man hollering murder! murder! and when I run I see they have this man tie. They tie he two foot, tie he hand and strap up he neck…” the neighbour recalled. Another interjected that the attackers turned off the light and it was only when you went onto the road you were able to catch a glimpse of what was taking place.

He added that while the fight was ensuing between the Venezuelan nationals and Duguid, the third suspect who lives a few houses away rushed over and launched an attack on Duguid with a cutlass.

“He end the man life, he finish it. This story has nothing to do with him (third suspect) but he just come and damage he (chopped up and beat)… he come with a 22 (cutlass) and start chop and broadside he (Duguid). He pull the man up from the trench and tek the hammer and lash he (Duguid) to his head,” the man said.

The residents said the third suspect could not be restrained.

“We couldn’t have done anything, we had to just watch what was taking place because we could ah injure too. This man was beaten to death and then you calling police nobody answering. We don’t know if they were sleeping. Taxi and motor bike had to go to the station to get the police to come here but by time they come the suspects done move out… them man (suspects) even had time to bathe and clean up them skin,” the eyewitness explained.

The entire ordeal, the neighbour said, lasted for close to two hours.

The police yesterday said a brown-handled knife was found on the grass parapet about four feet from the body and it was collected and marked.  Upon searching the drain, a Samsung cellphone and a pair of female sneakers were recovered by police.

A search of the De Kinderen yard revealed blood stains leading from a yard pipe to the stairs.

The house was also examined and camouflage pants and one wet white jersey with mud were collected.  The rest of the rope that formed a clothing line was collected and marked. Checks were also made for one the suspects at his De Kinderen residence but he was not located. While searching the location, the police found a cutlass near a plastic barrel.
