Islington three-year-old dies after struck by speeding car

A three-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries yesterday at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital after he was struck by a speeding car along the Canefield Public Road on Sunday evening.

Dead is Daniel Major, of Second Street Islington Village, East Bank Berbice.

According to information gathered, driver of the hire car, HA 9700, Claudwin Mc Donald, 21 years-old of Goed Bananen Land, East Canje, Berbice, was proceeding north along the Canefield Public Road, when the child, who was alone at the said time, attempted to cross from west to east and ended up into the path of the car.

“The driver, in an attempt to avoid hitting the 3-year-old applied brakes and swerved left. Despite the driver’s effort, the right side front of the car collided with Daniel Major”, the police said.

Major was picked up by the driver in an unconscious condition and rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital Accident and Emergency Unit suffering from a fractured rib. He succumbed just around 10. 45 am yesterday.

Major’s mother, Esther Stafford, when contacted, said that her husband and Major were searching for a candle as on Sunday they celebrated Major’s brother’s birthday. According to Stafford, her son was expected to start school in September. While breaking into tears the  woman called for justice.

A police statement said that a breathalyzer test conducted on Mc Donald [the driver] showed a reading of .00% microgram. He is in police custody assisting with investigations.
