Carnegie calls for recipes for indigenous cookbook

The Carnegie School of Home Economics (CSHE) is compiling a cookbook of healthy indigenous recipes and has issued a call for submissions from indigenous persons countrywide.

In an advertisement published in the July 3, 2022 Sunday Stabroek, CSHE said the book would be focused on indigenous dishes that utilise endemic, native and healthy produce readily available within indigenous communities.

“This recipe book will reflect 50 recipes of the Indigenous Peoples of Guyana from Regions 1 and 9 (the Project Area) with the focus to develop Nutritious Indigenous Recipes,” the ad explained, while noting that although indigenous persons from anywhere in the country can enter, preference would be given to persons from the two regions. “Indigenous youths and women are also encouraged to participate in this opportunity,” the ad further stated.

CSHE is requesting recipes in the categories of appetizers, main courses, deserts and beverages, and it said persons whose recipes are selected would win $10,000 in cooking utensils. 

According to the competition guidelines, all submissions must include the name of dish; name of the person who submitted the recipe; category of dish; a background of the dish (no more than 50 words), including food culture and farm to table concept, Ingredients and preparation methods.

The guidelines note that all recipes shall include main endemic and native produce used for the dishes.  The deadline for submissions is July 15,2022.
