Lusignan accident claims life of pedestrian

A pedestrian died on the Lusignan Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on Monday evening.

According to a release from the Guyana Police Force, the accident occurred about 18:55 hours and involved motorcar PVV 854 driven by 43-year old Wavell Lamatt of Lot 75 Beterverwagting, ECD, motorcycle CL 4502 owned and ridden by 31-year-old Leon Lewis of Lot 175 Nkrumah Street, Annandale, ECD, and the 53-year-old victim, Prahalad Sawh of Lot 167 Lusignan, ECD.

The release stated that the motorcycle was proceeding east along the southern lane of the northern carriageway of the Lusignan Public Road, when it was alleged by the motorcyclist that while he was riding behind a minibus  he suddenly saw a shadow-like figure step out from southern side of the road. When the bus passed, he was confronted with a pedestrian crossing the road right in front of him. As such he collided with the man causing them both to fall on the road sustaining injuries about their bodies.

The release said that Lewis then picked up his motorcycle and rode away, but was later taken to the Balwant Singh Hospital in Georgetown to seek medical attention where he was located by the Police. He has since been transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he is currently under police guard in a serious but stable condition.

Meanwhile, the driver of the motorcar told police that whilst proceeding east along the Lusignan Public Road at a normal rate of speed behind the motorcyclist, he saw someone lying on the roadway and he pulled to the north to avoid a collision, but despite his efforts, ran over Sawh. He then stopped to investigate and discovered a male lying on the road motionless.

The police and ambulance were summoned and the pedestrian was examined by a doctor who pronounced him dead on the scene. The body was escorted to the George-town Hospital Mortuary to await a post mortem examination. A Notice of Intended Prosecution has been served on the driver of the motor car who remains in custody assisting with information. A breathalyzer test found no trace of alcohol in his system.
