Human trafficking operation carried out at Bikers Bar

Officials on Thursday afternoon carried out an operation against human trafficking at Bikers Bar located at Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara during which fifteen female foreign nationals were found.

One suspect was arrested as an investigation is being conducted into alleged acts of human trafficking and labour exploitation.

In a press release issued yesterday, the Ministry of Home Affairs said the operation was conducted at approximately 13.30hrs. It is believed that the bar housed a strip club.

The release said ranks from the Guyana Police Force along with officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security’s Counter-trafficking in Persons Unit, who were acting on intelligence received carried out the operation.

During the process, the foreign nationals were discovered and interviewed. “Currently, an investigation is being undertaken into alleged acts of human trafficking and labour exploitation,” the release said.

According to the Ministry, the GPF will continue to monitor these establishments.

Back in 2018, 27 women, who were all foreign nationals were discovered after the police carried out a raid at the said bar.

The owner/operator at the time was also arrested.
