Guyana has little or nothing to offer our budding writers

Dear Editor,

It was around the mid-70s. I sent in a poem to the now defunct newspaper “Guyana Graphic.”  The poem was the first I wrote with the title, “His Colour not Mine.” When the poem was not published within the expected period for it to appear, I wrote a letter to the editor showing him the importance of the theme of the poem and appealed to him to publish. The poem was subsequently published in a new section called “The Poet’s Corner” which later accommodated the poetry of others.

In the course of my stay in Jamaica, I had the honour of seeing my poems published in the Sunday Gleaner. But what I value is the fact that at least one of the students who interacted with me saw her poem published. She thanked me for the encouragement. Poets grow. They need areas to see their poems in print as they grow to write better. Guyana has little or nothing to offer our budding writers. I have some ideas but to whom do I speak? Who will listen?

Sincerely,

Krishna Nand Prasad
