Diamond teen drowns during family outing

A 17-year-old girl drowned on Sunday during a family outing at Wismar Creek.

Dead is Nazana Samaroo, of Lot 33 Little Diamond Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara.

The drowning occurred at about 17:00 hours, according to the Guyana Police Force, which said the girl was swimming with her eight-year-old brother when the tragedy occurred.

In a statement, the force said Samaroo went to the creek with her 34-year-old mother, Lizana Anderson, her 40-year-old foster father, Keon McPherson, and her five siblings.

After Samaroo and the younger brother decided to go swimming, he noticed his sister, who attempted several times to swim across the creek, was missing. As a result, he raised an alarm.

A search of the entire area was immediately done by the family and other public spirited persons and the girl’s body was found at the bottom of the creek.

The teenager’s body was escorted to the Linden Hospital Complex, where she was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty. There were no marks of violence seen on the body.

The body is currently at the Pensioners Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
