A security guard was on Wednesday granted bail in the sum of $140,000 after she was slapped with two cybercrime charges of posting derogatory statements about two women.

Pauleen Mohabir, 49, of Lot 1 Samaroo Dam, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara (WBD), appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown and pleaded not guilty to both charges.

It is alleged that during the years 2021 and 2022, at Georgetown, Mohabir used a computer system to publish electronic data about Shonella Anderson on Facebook with intent to humiliate, harass or cause substantial emotional distress to her.

It is also alleged that Mohabir, during the years 2021 and 2022, at Georgetown, used a computer system to publish electronic data about Darlene Hawker on Facebook with intent to humiliate, harass, or cause substantial emotional distress to the woman.

According to the allegations presented in court by police, while Mohabir and Anderson are known to each other, the women are not on speaking terms. Moreover, the court heard that during the years 2021 and 2022, Mohabir created a Facebook account under the name Shonella Anderson and began posting degrading remarks about the woman and even went as far as announcing the death of the woman at one point.

The court was also informed that Mohabir, through different Facebook accounts, had started to continuously text Anderson on Facebook Messenger and threatened her. She also texted Anderson’s husband, pretending that it was her (Shonella Anderson) and made a series of degrading statements about the woman.

In relation to the charge concerning Hawker, the court heard that she and Mohabir were also not on speaking terms with each other. However, Mohabir allegedly used the woman’s name and pictures during the year of 2021 and 2022, and started to post degrading statements about her. It was said that Mohabir began sending threats and inappropriate messages to Hawker’s friends from the fake profile which she had created in the victim’s name.

Both situations were reported to the police and Mohabir was eventually arrested. During the course of the investigation, the police said that Mohabir’s cellphone was searched and all of the fake profiles were recovered. She was then told of the allegations and reportedly admitted to same.

Since the prosecutor had no objections to bail, Mohabir was released on $70,000 bail on each charge. The matter will be called again on October 11, when full disclosure of the evidence against Mohabir is expected to be made.
