Harvey, Springer, Newton, Roberts headline local IGG Track and Field team

CARIFTA Games gold medallist, Attoya Harvey, along with rising sprint star, Ezekiel Newton, will headline Guyana’s 30-member track and field team for this year’s Inter Guiana Games (IGG) scheduled for November 25 to 27.

The pair will be joined by several standout athletes for the Games which is back on the calendar after its last staging in 2017.

Yesterday, the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) unveiled its formidable team of 15 males and 15 females following trials on Sunday at the National Track and Field Centre in Leonora, West Coast Berbice.

The girls’ team will also include CARIFTA Games silver medalist, Narissa McPherson, sprinters, Karese Lloyd and Nalecia Glen, along with dynamic newcomer, Tiana Springer, who won the 200 metres, 400 metres and 800 metres at the trials.

Harvey was victorious in the 1500 metres and 3000 metres at the trials and will start as the favorite against her Surinamese and French Guianese counterparts.

Apart from Newton, who was the 200 metres silver medalist at this year’s South American U-18 Championships, the boys’ squad includes fellow sprinters, Osrick Pellew, Joshua Lam, and Malachi Austin. Javon Roberts who snared a silver in the 1500 metres at this year’s CARIFTA Games in

Jamaica, is also a part of the outfit after emphatically winning the 1500 metres and the 800 metres during Sunday’s trial.

Prior to the Games, there will be a camp on November 10 to12 and 17 to19.

The cream of the nation’s student athletes will be under the watchful eyes of coaches, Junior Cornette, Raymond Daw, and Kisha Burnette. Cornel Rose has been assigned the task of Team Manager.

Notes: At this year’s Games, sportsmen and women will compete for medals in ten disciplines. They are cycling, track and field, tennis, table tennis, volleyball, football, swimming, squash, basketball and badminton.

Initially held in 1967, the IGG is normally an annual affair among Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana, with the most recent edition being held in Suriname in 2017. The discipline of Badminton was the latest addition to the list of sporting events.
