Add more international records and gold medals to the resume’ of Carlos Petterson-Grifith.

Yesterday, the 93kg behemoth put his ‘raw’ strength on display and ‘chalked up’ yet another top of the podium, record-breaking performance at the ongoing Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships in Auckland, New Zealand.

One day after winning the Equipped segment of the event, the strong man nicknamed ‘The Showstopper’ returned to the platform and put on a show in the Classic (Raw) segment.

Petterson-Grifith stood tall on the top of the podium Down Under, breaking the Common-wealth Squat record en route to winning the 93kg class.

His best lifts yesterday were 305kg squat (record), 160kg bench press and 325kg deadlift. He also earned individual gold medals for the squat, deadlift and total (790kg).

The Classic or ‘Raw’ segment provides the best platform to prove the lifter’s true power.

Technically speaking, “raw” in the world of powerlifting means lifting with little to no additional equipment (lifting belts, bench shirts, wrist wraps, knee sleeves, etc.).

In competition, raw lifting means that athletes are allowed to use minimal equipment which must be approved by whatever federation is hosting the meet. (Emmerson Campbell)
