Man charged with murder of 75-year-old aunt

The nephew of 75-year-old Audrey Harris yesterday appear-ed in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where he was remanded to prison after being charged with murdering the woman.

Keith Walton Harris, 51, of Lot 11 Princes Street, George-town made his appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan who read the charge to him.

The defendant was not required to plead to the indictable charge which alleged that on December 2 at Lot 11 Princes Street, he murdered Audrey Harris.

The man is to make his next court appearance on January 17.

Yesterday, the court heard that on the day in question, the now deceased woman was in her yard with a hammer fixing some windows on an apartment on the lower flat of the two storey-house when her nephew walked into the yard armed with a knife.

According to the court prosecutor, the man told the police that when he walked in, his aunt struck at him with the hammer. He responded by barring the blow and stabbed the woman in her neck with the knife. Such was the severity of  the thrust that the knife exited the other side of her neck.

The woman then fell to the ground while the accused ran out of the yard.

A release from the police had stated that it was revealed that the man was “mentally ill” and lived with his aunt and her reputed husband, 50-year-old Laurence Hyde, in a two-story house. The defendant occupied the lower flat.

Prior to the incident, Audrey and Keith were involved in an argument and she had told the man to move out of the house which he refused to do.

On the day in question, at about 07:00 hours, the victim’s reputed husband left Audrey and Keith at home and went to work.

The police had said that according to Keith’s sister, Lois Byass,  at around 09:00hrs on December 2, she was on her way to work when she received a phone call from Audrey’s neighbour who stated that she had heard the woman screaming.

Byass then told the neighbour to go over and check on Audrey which she did, and saw the woman lying motionless in the yard which prompted Bypass to rush to the scene. Upon the niece’s arrival, she observed her aunt lying motionless in the yard in a pool of blood. The matter was immediately reported to the police who attended the scene.

Upon their arrival the police saw the woman lying face down, clad in a blue and white night dress and a hammer was found under her body.
