Corentyne man dies after tractor topples, pins him

A Corentyne man lost his life on Thursday after the tractor he was operating at Wellington Park, Corentyne toppled and pinned him.

Dead is Diaram Loojune, also known as ‘Rakesh’, 47, of Philippi Village, Corentyne. Loojune was ploughing a rice field when the accident occurred just around midday on Thursday.

According to the police, the man’s employer related that “while he was ploughing the rice field, the tractor flipped over and pinned him underneath.”

Another tractor was then used to remove the toppled tractor from on top of Loojune’s body after which was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The man’s mother, Indira Loojune, yesterday said that her son left home for work on Thursday morning as he would normally do. However, she said around midday she received news that the tractor had toppled with him and he was stuck underneath.

She said her son-in-law then used another tractor and rushed to the location where after some time they were able to remove the toppled tractor and eventually pull Loojune’s body from the mud.

According to the woman, her son has been ploughing rice fields for most of his adult life, “That’s wah he a always a do, plough rice field and shy paddy.”

The distraught woman stressed, that her son was a very helpful and kind person. “He was a good man. Me son-in-law sick about two years now and every time me son work he a bring one $5,000 or one $10,000 a week and give me daughter (his sister).”

She said the family is left at a loss as to how to handle the situation. “A me son, he always a try help abbay… Anything you need or want he a try get and he a try help abbay.”
