Two women are in police custody assisting with the investigation of the murder of Kaneville, Grove businessman, Shimron Adams, 41, who was shot during a robbery at his D’Urban and Chapel Streets, Lodge establishment on Monday night.

The dead’s man aunt, Maylene Simon, told Stabroek News yesterday that on Monday at around 11:25pm, her nephew was about to lock up his establishment, Shem’s Drink Depot when two unknown females approached him. According to her, she’s not sure what they wanted, however after that two armed men arrived on a motorcycle and approached and braced her nephew to a wall. Simon said according to what she heard, she is not sure if they braced him inside of his establishment or outside. She explained that they shot him in the abdomen and he fell to the ground.

After the businessman was shot, the two females began to help the male assailants by stripping Shimron of his bag, which at the time contained his documents and the days’ sales. Shimron was also stripped of his gold jewellery, car keys and a smaller amount of cash which he had on him at the time. The victim’s aunt said that the two females attempted to take his car that was parked outside of his establishment but said that they were unsuccessful. According to Maylene, a police car which was patrolling in the area heard the gunshots and arrived at the location. However, the main suspects had already left the scene and Adams was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Simon said her nephew’s body is currently at the Georgetown mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination. Simon added that the two females are in police custody assisting with investigation.

According to a police report, the shooting occurred at around 23:40 hrs at Lot ‘H’ D’Urban and Chapel Street, Lodge, Georgetown. The police say that the two attackers reportedly wore surgical face masks, and one was armed with a handgun. Adams operated a wholesale and retail business where alcoholic beverages were sold at the bottom flat of the three-storey concrete building located on the south-western side of D’Urban and Chapel streets.

The police said they were told that the two attackers entered the building through a galvanised sheet shutter and ordered Adams and a woman to lie on the ground, and they complied. The unarmed bandit then took off the businessman’s gold band and finger ring and ordered him to get up, which he did. The suspect then held onto the businessman’s shoulder bag and pulled at it, but Adams continued to hold onto the bag to prevent the suspect from taking it. The armed attacker discharged a round at Adams striking him in the abdomen and exited through his right side in the vicinity of his groin. The businessman then released the bag and fell to the ground.

The assailant removed the shoulder bag, picked up the businessman’s phone and the cell phone from his 29-year-old female companion, and fled through the shutter. The businessman was picked up by Police ranks from the Anti-Crime patrol and escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. One 9mm spent shell, along with a warhead, was recovered at the scene. The area was canvassed for CCTV cameras which were seen and the attackers were captured entering and leaving the business place on a black and white XR motorcycle.

The suspects escaped south onto Chapel Street, west onto Princes Street, and south onto St Stephen’s Street, Charlestown, where they were last seen. Shimron Adams leaves to mourn his reputed wife and 7 year- old son.
