A Corriverton woman was today placed on $200,000 bail after she was charged with fatally stabbing her common-law husband on the evening of January 1st, after he dealt her several slaps during an argument.

Lakiesha Garnett, 25, of Lot 66 Middle Street, Princetown appeared at the Number 51 Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh where she was charged with manslaughter.

The woman is accused of inflicting a fatal stab on Jason Bownath, 25, a labourer, on January 1st.

Garnett, who was represented by Attorney at Law, Mursaline Bacchus, was granted bail in the sum of $200,000 and will return to court on February 27th, for report.

According to a post-mortem examination, Bownath died as a result of shock and haemorrhage due to a stab wound to the heart.

The deceased and the accused were at the woman’s mother’s house when an argument ensued just around 11.50 pm on the night in question.

Bownath reportedly slapped the woman twice during the argument at the location. The woman then left to head home and shortly after Bownath did the same.

Stabroek News was told that the argument then continued at the home where the man then slapped the woman again after which she allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed him once to the left side of his chest.

He was taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital and subsequently transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he succumbed while receiving treatment.

(Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story had said that Lakiesha Garnett was remanded. That was not so.)
