Man, 21, charged over Devonshire Castle road deaths

Twenty-one-year-old Derindra Sitaram of Lot B Zeelandia, Wakenaam, Region Three was yesterday charged with two counts of motor vehicular man-slaughter, driving under the influence of alcohol and failing to offer assistance to injured persons. 

He made his first appearance before Magistrate Esther Sam at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on January 31st he drove motor car PAD 831 under the influence resulting in the death of fifty-two-year-old Mohan Maniram of Devonshire Castle and twenty-three-year-old Zamaan Rafeek of Jib Paradise Region Two. The two were on  bicycles when he hit them down. The court also heard that he failed to render assistance to the two men.

Sitaram was arrested at his home, a couple of hundreds of meters from the scene of the accident.

The police say that the accused was not required to plead and bail was granted in the sum $2m. The matter was adjourned to February 28, 2023.
