New GCF leadership installed

Director of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) Irshad Mohamad was appointed recently to serve as vice-president after that post became vacant when Anand Raghunauth, who was vice president, assumed the presidency.

Retired chess administrator and a former president of the GCF Shiv Nandalall has been recalled to serve as director of the GCF. Nandalall was chosen by the board based on his knowledge of administration and expertise in chess. Nandalall had made headway in taking chess to the youths in Tiger Bay, West Demerara, Linden, Berbice, Bartica and Sophia when he was president. The GCF was named Most Improved Association of 2011 by the National Sports Commission under Nandalall’s tenure.

On January  28, Aquilani Swaminadha won the DeSinco Ltd National Boys Under-12 Chess Championship. He also won the prize for the Best Under-10 chess player. The new Girls Under-12 champion is Kataleya Sam who also took home the prize for the Best Under-10 girls chess player. The one-day Rapid Tournament was held at the School of the Nations in Georgetown.

Internationally, Netherlands’ grandmaster Anish Giri won the 2023 Tata Steel Tournament for the first time, ahead of world champion Magnus Carlsen.
