The simple larceny charge that was brought against 23-year-old Nickacia Sobers on Monday has since been dismissed after partial payments were made to the man who refused to give evidence against her during their second court appearance yesterday.

On Monday, Sobers who is a primary school teacher of Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara, was charged with stealing $467,000 from Richard Brathwaite on December 20, 2022 at Avenue of the Republic in Georgetown.

During her initial court hearing, Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan had remanded the young woman who had pleaded guilty to the charge and had deferred sentencing for yesterday. However, when the parties appeared yesterday in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, Sobers told the Chief Magistrate that someone was present on her behalf to repay Brathwaite a part of the money.

On Monday the accused had also told the court that she had the sum of $200,000 at home to repay the man who had refused to take the money in portions.

However, upon receiving the partial amount on Friday, Brathwaite then declared that he no longer wished to continue with the matter and refused to give any evidence against Sobers and as such the case was dismissed.

On Monday the court had heard that Sobers and Brathwaite were involved in a relationship which eventually ended as a result of the incident.

It was said that Brathwaite operates a shoe stall at the corner of Avenue of the Republic and Robb Street and during their time together Sobers was a frequent visitor at the stall.

On December 20th, 2022, the man had told the police that he had tucked away the sum of $467,000 in his motorcar which was parked and secured at the front of the stall and that a few hours later Sobers had visited and he allowed her to enter the car which he said she spent some time sitting in alone.

After a while, Brathwaite then entered his vehicle and proceeded to the Timehri bus park where he dropped the young woman off and then went back to his stall. When he arrived there, he said he had made checks for his money and discovered that it was missing which prompted him to report the matter to the Brickdam Police Station.
