Essequibo left-hander Kemol Savory struck his maiden first-class century to help put the Guyana Harpy Eagles in command against the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force at the Brian Lara Stadium, Trinidad yesterday.

At the close of the penultimate day’s play, Trinidad and Tobago Red Force, chasing a victory target of 412, were 106-3.

Earlier, the Harpy Eagles resuming on their overnight score of 96-3 with Savory 34 not out, declared their second innings on 247-6 after batting some 83 overs.

The highlight of the innings was the partnership between savory and skipper Leon Johnson.

The pair added some 141 runs for the fourth wicket with Johnson scoring his second half-century of the match. His 158-ball 74 was laced with 10 fours and a six before he was dismissed by Bryan Charles who also removed Kevin Sinclair for one.

The 26-year-old Savory duly motored from his overnight score of 34 to 101 not out. His 222-ball innings featured five fours and a six. Charles ended with 2-60 while Darren Bravo picked up 2-23.

In pursuit of the mammoth total, Trinidad was off to a bad start when opener Jeremy Solozano was dismissed by Nial Smith for a nine-ball duck while Keemo Paul removed his opening partner, Keagan Simmonds, for eight. Paul also accounted for Jason Mohammed who was trapped leg before wicket for 13 as Red Force slipped to 70 for three.

However, Darren Bravo resisted with a fighting 63 not out from 105 balls, carving seven boundaries so far. At the other end is Jyd Goolie who is on 14 from 64 balls. His innings has featured two boundaries.

When play resumes at 10am this morning, the Guyana Harpy Eagles will look to capture the remaining seven wickets for victory.

Meanwhile at the Guyana National Stadium, Windward Islands Volcanoes captain Alick Athanaze fell agonisingly short of a hundred and past captain Kavem Hodge hit 82, as the Volcanoes were bowled out for 298 in their second innings to leave Scorpions two days to chase their target.

Volcanoes were 19 for two before Athanaze came to the crease and batted through lunch to put on 171 with Hodge for the third wicket.

Hodge was lbw to first innings destroyer Derval Green while Athanaze fell two overs later to off-spinner Kirk McKenzie for 97 before the Volcanoes could go past 200, but the rest of the batting caved in to steady bowling from the Scorpions.

Barbadian all-rounder Justin Greaves continued a memorable match with 33, left-hander Larry Edward was not out on 23, and Test batsman Sunil Ambris made 23. Left-arm spinner Patrick Harty was the most successful Scorpions bowler with three for 62 from 19 overs, and Test pacer Marquino Mindley and fellow pacer Nicholson Gordon got two wickets apiece.
