The Guyana Harpy Eagles placed themselves in a solid position to regain the West Indies Championship following a 143-run win over Trinidad and Tobago in round three yesterday.

Resuming on 106 for three with 306 runs more needed for victory, the hosts were bowled out for 268 in 97.5 overs on the final day at Tarouba.

Discarded West Indies batsman, Darren Bravo resumed the day on 63 but fell five runs short of a century. His 170-ball innings featured 11 boundaries including a pull through square leg off of Veerasammy Permaul the delivery before he was caught at mid-wicket by a leaping Kevin Sinclair. Permaul also removed Imran Khan with the next delivery, the batsman getting a faint edge to Anthony Bramble behind the stumps.

Bravo’s overnight partner, Jyd Goolie could only add four runs to his overnight score before he was run out for 18 from 87 balls.

Tion Webster had a short-lived 16-run cameo before he was bowled by the left-arm spinner, Permaul, who moved past Nikita Miller to become the leading wicket taker in first-class cricket for West Indies, picking up 3-58 and 6-94.

Amir Jangoo resisted the Eagles bowlers with a well composed 50 not out from 128 balls. He struck five fours and a six and made the visitors work for the final wicket, sharing in a 57-run partnership with Justin Manick who made 22 from 48 balls before he was stumped by Tevin Imlach off of Sinclair.

Uthman Muhammad also showed fight with 25 from 60 balls before being dismissed by Ronsford Beaton who ended with 2-53. Keemo Paul also picked up 2-73 while Nial Smith and Sinclair had one wicket each.

Meanwhile the Guyana Cricket Board sent a congratulatory message to the team after the win.

Following is the message.

“The President and Executive members of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) wish to congratulate the Guyana Harpy Eagles (GHE) team on their victory over Trinidad and Tobago Red Force (TTRF) team in the third round of the West Indies Championship at Brian Lara Stadium.

The resounding victory by 143 has meant that the GHE team remains at the top of the table going into the final two rounds which would be played in Guyana.  The GCB would also like to congratulate Kemol Savory on his maiden first-class century of 101 not out in the second innings which gave the GHE bowlers a comfortable target to defend on the final day. Special congratulatory message is also extended to Veerasammy Permaul who became the leading wicket-taker in Regional First-Class cricket during the match.”
