Guyana Men’s, Women’s teams suffer losses on opening day

Guyana suffered defeats on the opening day of the Men’s and Women’s team section in Caribbean Regional Table Tennis Federation (CRTTF) Senior Championships yesterday at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.

The men’s team lost 0-3 to powerhouse Cuba. The combination of Elishaba Johnson and Jonathan Van Lange lost 2-11, 5-11, and 2-11 to the duo of Livan Martinez and Andy Pereira in the first encounter. In the second fixture, Shemar Britton lost 2-3 to Adrian Perez via scores of 10-12, 11-6, 11-8, 911, and 10-12.

In the final match, Van Lange went down 0-3 to Pereira. He lost 5-11, 3-11, and 2-11. The men’s team is scheduled to play Suriname today at the same venue.

Meanwhile, the women’s outfit suffered the same fate and score-line to Puerto Rico. The unit of Chelsea Edghill and Natalie Cummings lost to Brianna Burgos and Daniely Rios [1-3] 2-11, 8-11, 11-9, and 6-11.

In the second fixture, Thuraia Thomas was defeated by Melanie Diaz [0-3] 3-11, 4-11, and 5-11. In the final encounter, Cummings was defeated by Rios [0-3] 8-11, 2-11, and 1-11. The women’s team will now turn their attention to Barbados today.
