The new Independence Boulevard, often referred to as ‘Punt Trench Dam’, is set for opening soon, barring some minor final touches, the Ministry of Public Works said yesterday.

Juan Edghill, Minister of Public Works, conducted a walk through and site visit of the project area earlier yesterday.

The Minister and his Engineering team went through the details to ensure all specifications of the $1 billion project have been met.

Last year when the project was launched,  Edghill had stated that the Boulevard formed part of wider plans to modernise and transform the Capital City, Georgetown.

“People used to frighten to drive through Albouystown and people will start liming in here now, people who did not want to buy property in here are going to come in and start buying property and developing businesses,” the Minister had stated.

The new Boulevard has a double-lane carriageway on the northern side and a single-lane carriageway on the southern side, and between these two carriageways, there is a promenade which will be outfitted with lights and benches, the release said. Concrete drains are also to be installed.
