GDF ranks return from Grenada after hurricane relief mission

The troops deployed to Grenada to assist in restoration efforts following the devastating effects of Hurricane Beryl returned home on Sunday and were welcomed in a reception held at Air Station London, Timehri, according to a release yesterday from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).

Their mission, which lasted for 106 days, involved the rehabilitation of critical infrastructure, including the Revenue Authority Building, Police Station, Post Office, Magistrate’s Court, and the Office of the Minister for Carriacou & Petite Martinique Affairs. These projects helped restore essential services to a community of 6,000 Grenadians, the release said.

Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, expressed  gratitude to the ranks for their commitment and dedication, which ensured the success of “Operation Beryl.” He emphasized that not only was the mission accomplished, but the ranks demonstrated outstanding service to the nation, overcoming challenges and safely returning home. Khan commended their ability to “make it happen” even under difficult circumstances and highlighted how the operation aligned with the mandate from President Irfaan Ali, to give hope to the people of Carriacou.

The release said that Khan also praised the  support of the Private Sector Commission, which played a crucial role in the rebuilding effort. The Chairman of the Private Sector Commission, Komal Singh, saluted the work of the ranks and expressed pride in the successful collaboration. He reaffirmed the private sector’s commitment to supporting the GDF in future efforts, saying, “We feel a sense of joy to be part of this collaboration… the Private Sector will continue to offer support in times of need.”
