Presidential candidate of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, Azruddin Mohamed,ย  visited the Ruimveldt Police Station this morning, accompanied by his lawyer, Siand Dhurjon, following an attempted raid on his residence by eight police officers late last night. The officers, reportedly heavily armed, according to eyewitnesses forced their way into the compound without presenting a warrant, claiming they merely wanted to have a “conversation” with Mohamed.

The Police today in a release said that Mohamed is being investigated in relation to the obstruction of justice.

According to Hana Mohamed, Azruddin Mohamed’s sister, who was present during the 20-minute encounter, the police refused to state their reason for being there, only indicating a desire to “have a word” with her brother. She further stated that “inside sources” suggest the police intended to charge Azruddin Mohamed with obstruction of justice, an accusation the WIN party denies.

The alleged basis for this charge, according to the source, is Azruddin Mohamed’s “honourable” act of apologizing to a woman on behalf of a controversial party supporter, Bradley Sampson, who was involved in an assault on Tuesday at the Square of the Revolution. Azruddin Mohamed highlighted that the supporter, ย Sampson, is not a member of the WIN party, but merely a supporter. “He [Azruddin] did the honourable thing, and he apologized to the woman, as any nice-minded, caring, compassionate person would do,” she asserted.

Speaking with Stabroek News today, Azruddin Mohamed confirmed that the police made no prior contact with him before their arrival. He stated that the officers ย “lied to the guards, stating that they were going to another residence,” before “forced their way into the compound.” He recounted, “The guards said, no, this is a private property, you cannot drive in here like that. And they handled the man, forced their way into the compound. Then Hana came out and then that was it.” Azruddin Mohamed added that when he asked about the purpose of their visit, they simply said they “wanted to talk to me. That’s all.โ€

The WIN party released a statement last evening condemning the incident, labeling it a “blatant violation of the rights of its leader and Presidential Candidate” and a “clear act of political persecution.” The statement highlighted that police officers, bearing high-powered weapons, stormed the private property around 11:30 PM on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

The party asserts that this “reckless action and abuse of power by the Guyana Police Force instilled fear in family members, staff, and onlookers present at the time.” They declared their refusal to be intimidated by “fear-mongering tactics” and urged the Guyana Police Force “not to allow themselves to be weaponized against political opponents of the ruling party.”

The WIN party has pledged to raise this matter with international observer missions currently stationed in Guyana, emphasizing that “Democracy is not only measured on election day but by how political opponents are treated every day leading up to it.” They called upon the observer missions to “speak up and intervene where necessary to ensure the integrity of this election process.”

To the Guyanese public, WIN urged vigilance: “Watch closely. Record everything. Speak out. The future of our country cannot and must not be left in the hands of fear, intimidation, and unchecked power.”

The police today issued the following release:

At 16:00hrs yesterday (16th July 2025), a 29-year-old female Sales Rep and a resident of McDoom, East Bank Demerara, went to the East La Penitence Police Station and reported that on the 14th July 2025, she was beaten and assaulted by ๐๐ซ๐š๐๐ฅ๐ž๐ฒ ๐’๐š๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง, aka ‘๐ƒ๐จ๐ ๐ ๐ฒ’.

The woman told the Police that she was employed by ๐๐ซ๐š๐๐ฅ๐ž๐ฒ ‘๐ƒ๐จ๐ ๐ ๐ข๐ž’ ๐’๐š๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง, a key organiser in the political party led by ๐€๐ณ๐ซ๐ฎ๐๐๐ข๐ง ๐Œ๐จ๐ก๐š๐ฆ๐ž๐, namely, We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), to perform certain tasks on Nominations Day for the said WIN party, and in return thereof, Sampson promised to pay her fifty thousand dollars ($50,000).

At about 11:00 hrs on 15th July 2025, the woman went to the Square of the Revolution (Cuffy Square), Vlissengen Road, Georgetown, to uplift the payment from Sampson. However, Sampson only paid her ten thousand dollars ($10,000).

In consequence, an argument erupted during which Sampson dealt her several kicks and cuffs about her body and lashed her with a gun to her head, causing her to receive multiple injuries. The woman informed the Police that most of the incident was captured on video and shared widely on social media. She stated that Sampson later called her via Facebook Messenger and requested for her to meet him at Azruddin Mohamed’s house at Green Field, East Bank Demerara. As requested, that afternoon, she met with Mohamed, Sampson, and other persons at the said location.

The woman informed the Police that:

(i) She was detained against her will at the premises by several armed security guards in excess of an hour;

(ii) Azruddin Mohamed shouted at her angrily when he learnt that the video of the incident with Sampson was already on Facebook;

(iii) Bradley Sampson was present while all of this was taking place;

(iv) Azruddin Mohamed instructed her not to pursue the matter against Sampson, to accompany Sampson to the Police Station, and to inform the Police that she is withdrawing all complaints against Sampson; and in consideration thereof, he will pay to her five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000);

(v) one of the guards at the premises said to her, โ€˜Donโ€™t feel I donโ€™t know you living in McDoom.โ€™ He then raised his jersey and showed her a black handgun that was tucked in his waist. This resulted in her being fearful for her life. Eventually, she was permitted to leave the premises. However, between 7:45 and 9:00 hours on 16th July, 2025, Doggy called her multiple times on her cellphone, asking her not to pursue the matter, but she refused to do so.

The woman made a report to the Police at East La Penitence Police Station. She was subsequently examined by a doctor regarding the injuries received, and a Medical Certificate was duly issued.

As a result of the foregoing, a wanted bulletin was issued by the Police for Bradley โ€˜Doggyโ€™ Sampson. The Police considered the allegations which have been made against Mr. Azruddin Mohamed and his security guards to be of a serious nature and may involve the commission of several serious criminal offences, including attempting to pervert the course of justice.

As a result, and in compliance with the Policeโ€™s lawful duties under the Police Act and other relevant legislation, the Police attempted to contact Mr. Mohamed last night at the said premises for the purpose of investigating the grave allegations made against him. Additionally, the Police had video evidence that Sampson was at the said premises.

At 10:20 hrs today (17th July 2025), Mr. Azruddin turned himself in at the Ruimveldt Police Station, in the company of his attorney-at-law and is currently assisting the Police with the ongoing investigations.
