Guyana women stun defending champs Dominican Republic

From Donald Duff in St Lucia Trenace Lowe picked up two matches while Chelsea Edghill won the decider as the Guyana women’s table tennis team stunned the defending women’s champions, the Dominican Republic by three games to two to rush into the semi-finals on the first day of the 51st Caribbean Table Tennis Championships yesterday in St Lucia.

Tie breaker!

They split the first two games of the preliminary rounds of the current Limacol Caribbean Premier League with Guyana winning the first match on July 31 by 19 runs at the Providence National Stadium before Trinidad earned some measure of revenge by winning the second played at the Queen’s Park Oval earlier this month by three runs.

Justice Diane Inshanally yesterday refused to grant an injunction filed by secretary of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) Anglea Haniff which sought to prevent two executives from the Guyana Cricket Board from voting at the West Indies Cricket Board elections which starts tomorrow and concludes on Thursday in Barbados.

Pakistan test match still in limbo

The deadline given by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) to the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) to indicate whether it will be able to host the first test match between the West Indies and Pakistan in July will be up today but no agreement has yet been reached among the WICB, the GCB and the government.

Tourism sector gearing up for CPLT20 tourney

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Irfaan Ali said his ministry will be gearing up to take advantage of the benefits of staging matches in the inaugural Caribbean Premier League T20 (CPL) cricket tournament following the news that Guyana is one of the six franchise countries  which will host matches in this year’s tournament which runs from July 29 to August 6.

`We came out well in the end’

Manager of the Guyana T20 cricket team that ended as runners up to Trinidad and Tobago in the just concluded West Indies Cricket Board’s Regional T20 cricket competition Alvin Johnson said that despite the disappointment of losing in the final, he viewed the tournament as successful.

Lewis storms to men’s singles title

National player Edinho Lewis showed off  a wide repertoire of strokes whilst playing unbeaten to win the men’s Open singles when the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) senior and `C’ Class tournaments  sponsored by Hopkinson Mining Company concluded last night at the National Gymnasium.
