GPSU says Yarde re-elected president

The Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) yesterday released results from its recent elections indicating that incumbent Patrick Yarde has been re-elected as president for another term, while his lone challenger Gregory Gaspar and his supporters last evening said they were still awaiting a formal declaration despite their concerns about the integrity of the process.

Dave Martins’ ‘Postpone’ rallies parking meter protestors

The now weekly anti-parking meter demonstrations, initially touted as ‘silent protests,’ took on a new life yesterday when protestors began marching to Dave Martins’ recently released song, ‘Postpone,’ which offers social commentary on the controversial metered parking issue.

Protests over VAT measures question promised good life

Two separately organized protests in front of the Ministry of Finance (MoF) and the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) yesterday saw protestors questioning the concept of the “good life” that has continuously been promised by the Government of Guyana in light of recent Value-Added Tax (VAT) measures.

Downpour fails to dampen Mash spirit

Hours of rainfall in the lead up to the 47th Republic Day anniversary celebrations did little to dampen the spirits of thousands of Guyanese who turned out yesterday to view the Mashramani costume and float parade.

Region 1 REO booted from PAC hearing over alleged attempt to mislead

  Regional Executive Officer (REO) of Region 1 Leslie Wilburg was expelled from the parliamentary chamber during yesterday’s sitting of the Public Accounts Commit-tee (PAC) on the basis that he had provided false information on $30 million worth of overpayments and he could face disciplinary action.

Anti-parking meter protesters say lower rates not enough

  A second demonstration against the city’s metered parking project saw a swell of support yesterday and although government, through consultation with the Mayor & City Council and Smart City Solutions, has committed to ensuring lower parking fees, protesters made clear that a reduction is not enough.

Hundreds protest city parking meters

Hundreds yesterday lined Regent Street, opposite City Hall, to demonstrate against the implementation of the metered parking system but what was intended to be a silent, apolitical protest by the Movement Against Parking Meters (MAPM), saw tempers flare after a hostile counter-protest was organised by those backing the project.

Breach in dam led to Buxton flooding

The Chairman of the Buxton/Foulis NDC says that that the week-long flooding that occurred in sections of Buxton near the railway embankment was the result of a six-foot-wide-breach in the east sideline dam, which was repaired yesterday afternoon.
