Inclusive governance is dead

It is now over twenty years that inclusive governance, referred to previously by other slogans such as ‘participatory democracy,’ was enshrined in the Guyana constitution.

In his Tweet after the meeting with the President Irfan Ali and his team, the US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken said: “Guyana remains a key partner as we work to bolster food and energy security, promote shared prosperity and inclusive growth, strengthen transparency, and safeguard the environment.”

Whither the AFC?

The Alliance for Change (AFC), the junior partner to A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) in the alliance, APNU+AFC, which formed the government of Guyana from 2015 to 2020 and which now forms the main Opposition, has hinted at a press conference on Friday last, reported in SN yesterday, that it will not renew the Cummingsburg Accord (Accord), its secret agreement with APNU, which comes to an end in December.

Inquiring into the elections

It was reported on June 15 that the Chair of GECOM, Justice Claudette Singh, opposed an investigation by GECOM into the elections proposed by Opposition nominated members.

The biometric plan

Free and fair elections are guaranteed by access of all political parties to the political process, an accurate voters’ list, freedom to vote in conditions of security, the secrecy of the ballot, an adequate system of identification of voters, a transparent counting method and secure transmission of the results.

Shared governance has no political support

In the case of the Attorney General v Richardson, the then Attorney General, Basil Williams, challenged in the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) the ruling of the Guyana Court of Appeal striking down as unconstitutional the provision of the Constitution that limited a President to two terms.
