CARICOM team arrives for second try at recount

With another admonition from CARICOM Chairperson Mia Mottley that a legitimate government depends on a transparent recount of votes from the March 2nd general elections, a three-member scrutineer team from the Community touched down here yesterday for a second attempt at resolving the country’s electoral crisis and a long-awaited start date for the process is expected to be set today.

GECOM yesterday said a recount of ballots in the hotly disputed March 2nd general elections could take at least 25 days and amid continuing fears of rigging, the opposition PPP last night said  it has “grave doubt” whether the process would be credible given the voting by Chair Claudette Singh on several pivotal matters.

High turnout seen as disciplined services vote

Members of Guyana’s disciplined services yesterday showed up in large numbers to vote early for the general and regional polls but up to late last night the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) was unable to give a figure on the turnout.

APNU+AFC pledges cash transfers from oil $$

Granger announces squatter resettlement initiative

President David Granger last evening announced plans for a squatter resettlement body as he sought to make his case for re-election to residents of Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara), where he also touted conditional cash transfers for families with school-age children from oil revenues and access to farming lands for laid off sugar workers.

13 parties submit lists for polls

A total of 13 parties yesterday submitted candidates’ lists to contest the upcoming March 2nd general and regional elections, with the incumbent A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) coalition, the opposition People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), and the United Republican Party (URP) being the only ones seeking to run in all 10 regions.

‘We have a plan’

To a roaring crowd of thousands of supporters, the governing APNU+AFC coalition yesterday launched its bid for a second term in office, with leaders saying that much has been accomplished over the past four years and they have a plan that will ensure that Guyana will never be poor again.

New UG grads urged to ensure development is done right

With the nascent oil sector expected to transform the nation, the members of the 2019 graduating class of the University of Guyana (UG) yesterday heard calls for them to ensure that development is done right, take a stand against corruption and be the change they want to see.
