Firefighters save Alexander St building

Firefighters yesterday managed to contain a fire in a partially-constructed building along Alexander Street, near the Bourda Market.

Jagdeo attends meeting on future of ACP group

The Leader of the Opposition and former President of Guyana, Bharrat Jagdeo recently attended a meeting of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States’ Eminent Persons Group (EPG) in Brussels, Belgium.

More work needed to address HIV in prisons

Minister of Health, Dr George Norton in his presentation at the UNAIDS 37th Programme Coor-dinating Board meeting last month in Geneva, Switzerland said not enough has been done to address HIV in prisons.

Correction

A report in Tuesday’s edition, headlined “Labour violations uncovered at Camp and Robb Streets work site,” erroneously stated that a structure being erected at the corner of Camp and Robb streets is to be an addition to the Teleperformance call centre, which is located on the northern side.

Some Mabaruma residents petition against township status

Following a District Conference hosted by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) in Mabaruma on 18th October 2015, a resolution disagreeing with the government’s decision to officially declare Mabaruma a town in 2016, was presented and unanimously passed According to a PPP press release, residents of the districts within the Mabaruma/Hosororo/Kumaka Neighbourhood Democratic Council are of the opinion that despite the improvements over the last two decades, further infrastructural development and upgrades particularly in the area of utility services need to be realised before the community can attain the status of Township.

Police in Bartica outreach

The month of October saw a number of initiatives and outreach programmes being conducted by the Guyana Police Force (F-Division) in Bartica, as it aims to create public trust and strengthen the reinforcement of secure communities.
