Letters to the Editor

We need answers from the Ministry of Education

Dear Editor, The fiasco of Pastor Steven Anderson of the Faithful Word Baptist Church being allowed and invited by the Ministry of Education to preach in our public schools, points to a deeper issue in the Guyanese society: that is the underlying assumption and belief held by many that Guyana is a still a Christian state.

There should be a reconciliation between President and Jordan on divergent approaches to education

Dear Editor, One cannot help being moved by Swami Aksharananda’s incisive letter in the media (SN, March 29) in which he exposed the apparent contradiction between President Granger’s praise for the education provided by private schools and the harsh taxation policy being pursued by the Minister of Finance “as he sought to justify the 14% tax on students” while pronouncing on “the sins of private schools”.

Cricket needs a great deal of shaking up

Dear Editor, While Australia was being beaten by India, Australian broadcasters were saying seriously that Ashwin, the best off-spinner in the game, was learning from Lyon, who may be Australia`s best, but obviously not as good as Ashwin, and that Yadav, who has played more games than Cummings, and looks likely to be soon among the best quicks, was learning from the new, raw kid, Cummings.

‘It is true I am a protagonist for changing the methodology associated with the selection of Gecom commissioners’

Dear Editor, Although I have already begun to truly enjoy my retirement, and although I have, over many years, been preparing for this new phase of my life, not lastly by programming myself not to be embroiled in discussions on issues associated with the Guyana Elections Commission (Gecom), it is imperative that, on occasion, some answers must be given to those who assail positions in which I deeply believe.

How can GAWU want to sustain the sugar industry and not sustain Uitvlugt?

Dear Editor, The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) Inc would like to respond to the letter that was published in the Stabroek News on 24 March, 2017 and titled ‘Injustices to sugar workers are being perpetrated anew,’ penned by Mr Seepaul Narine, General Secretary of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU).

There should be no increase in fees at UG

Dear Editor, I have had an abiding interest in the University of Guyana and in spite of many negative things said about the university, I have always believed and continue to believe that UG has played a tremendous role in providing essential human resources for the development of Guyana.

Granger has some decisions to make

Dear Editor, What is really amazing is that protests have been successfully organized against the parking meters affair and VAT on private education but no such efforts have been placed behind the immediate bread and butter issues affecting the entire nation:  the VAT on water and electricity.

The student tax is a reversal of the President’s education policy

Dear Editor, In the imposition of the notorious student tax, the authorities have manufactured an unfortunate and a convenient divide between private and public schools, giving the impression that private schools are not contributing to the education of the nation and students attending private schools are not Guyana’s children.
