The World Beyond Georgetown

For close to seven years now reporters attached to this newspaper have gone to various communities in all ten regions of Guyana, seeking to shed light on their customs, way of life and issues. Recognising that for a very long time, many of the far-to-reach places were out of sight and in several instances out of mind as well.

Blueberry Hill

Blueberry Hill, is a beautiful village situated on one of the hills in Wismar, Linden and is a haven to the more than 1,500 people living there.

Helena Number 2

Helena Number 2 is a village situated in Mahaica and close to the Mahaica River Bridge which separates it from another village called Wilhelmina.

Broomhall

Photos by Joanna Dhanraj Approximately 48 kilometres from Georgetown and bordered by Fairfield and Carlton Hall with its expanse stretching to the Atlantic on one side and the rice fields on the other is the community of Broomhall.

Hauraruni revisited

Hauraruni is a Christian cooperative approximately 34 miles from Georgetown or 15 miles from the Soesdyke junction on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway.

Cottage, Mahaicony

A friendly little village in Mahaicony situated approximately 51 kilometres from Georgetown, Cottage is a haven to its more than 250 residents, whose foreparents reportedly took up residence there in the mid-1800s.

Amsterdam is a community situated on the eastern side of Leguan enclosed by villages Canefield and Endeavour, rice fields and the seawall that keeps the Essequibo at bay.
