Two men died last evening and another two were seriously injured when an unlicensed driver of a minibus in a bid to dodge a police patrol slammed into the concrete culvert on the Supply Public Road, East bank Demerara.
Dead are Jimmy Russell, 27, and Moses Christian, 24, both of Friendship Village, East Bank Demerara. One of the injured persons is Michael Hamilton, 20, also of Friendship.
The men’s deaths came hours after six persons perished in a horrific crash on the East Coast of Demerara.
Reports are that the men were seen imbibing alcohol around 4 pm yesterday before four of them including the now dead men decided to go for a drive south along the East Bank Highway.
Stabroek News was told that on their way, in the vicinity of Supply, Russell, who was driving, spotted a police patrol coming out of a street. Knowing that he was without a licence, Russell, according to reports, sped away during which time he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash into the concrete culvert. Both he and Christian died instantly while two of their friends suffered injuries about their bodies.
Dianne Gordon, Christian’s reputed wife, said he left home around 4 pm yesterday telling her that he was going to Supply. Gordon said she was not aware that he was going for a drive with friends.
The young mother of one said that she was home around 6 pm when she got a call informing her of the death of her husband. Amrita Jadgnauth, wife of Russell said that she was home taking care of her two children when she received the news. The woman said that earlier in the day her husband who operates a horse-drawn cart was at a shop next door to her drinking. She described her husband as a fun-loving person. (Nigel Williams)
