Best graduating student at Hugh Wooding admitted to Bar

Guyanese law student Sohan Jaikaran Poonai won the honour of Best Graduating Student at the Hugh Wooding Law School for 2005/2007.

According to a press release Poonai graduated with 11 grade As and is the second Guyanese to receive the said honour. He also received six other awards: the Most Outstanding Student for two years, Most Outstanding Year II Student, Best Performance in Civil Procedure II, the First Outstanding Year II Student, Best Performance by a student for Guyana, Best Performance in Civil Procedure I and Civil Procedure Practice II.

Poonai’s path of excellence started at the New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary School where he was adjudged Best Performer in Region Six at the Caribbean Examinations Council exams in 2000; a runner-up Best Speaker at the National Youth Parliament in 2002, a member of the champion debating team at the University of Guyana and the Best Debater at individual debates at the Caribbean Intercollegiate Debating Competition in 2004.

He was admitted to the Guyana Bar on October 11 by Chief Justice Carl Singh.

In his address Poonai said he is grateful to his parents, siblings and other relatives and friends.

He also extended gratitude to his teachers particularly professors Aubrey Bishop, and Peter Britton. He also thanked the chambers of RN Poonai and attorney-at-law Jaya Manickchand.
