Windsor Forest man fined for malicious damage to property

Magistrate Fazil Azeez last week Tuesday fined a 25-year-old man $20,000 with an alternative of six months imprisonment after the man admitted that he damaged articles valued at over $100,000.

Ansraj Gobin of Windsor Forest, West Coast Demerara admitted to charges of malicious damage to property and injury to a fence and was handed the sentence by the magistrate at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.

According to the prosecution’s case on October 7 at Windsor Forest, Gobin unlawfully and maliciously damaged a blender, a kerosene stove, a quantity of kitchen utensils and a quantity of foodstuff with a total value of $100,000 the property of Salick Ram. He also damaged a section of Ram’s fence valued at $50,000. A report was made to the police and he was arrested and charged.

In explaining his actions, Gobin said that the items were damaged during a “drunk fight” and said that his home was damaged also. He said that the items in Ram’s house were damaged because the house had collapsed. Ram, meanwhile said that Gobin had used a piece of wood to damage the items. The magistrate imposed the sentence after listening to both sides.
