The Guyana Police Force says road fatalities this year have plummeted by 48% and it made 5,042 cases against errant motorists in November.
According to a press release speeding was the most prevalent offence with 2,841 cases made against defaulting motorists. The police said too there were 326 cases of overloaded minibuses, 122 cases of unlicensed drivers, 112 cases of obstruction, 126 breaches of the road service licence, 88 breaches of insurance, 96 cases where drivers stopped within 30 feet of a corner, 39 cases where motorists failed to wear a safety helmet and 54 cases where drivers failed to wear their seatbelts.
The police said to date there have been 89 fatal accidents which resulted in the death of 101 persons. This means that there has been a 48% reduction in road fatalities compared with the corresponding period last year where 195 persons died in 158 fatal accidents.
The release said too the campaign has caused a dramatic reduction in child road fatalities with four children perishing this year compared with 28 last year.
