– court hears

“When he pick up meh money-bag … I run behind he foh it” stated Alicia James who says she had $25,000 in cash and a canvas bag stolen from her stall by Glenn Corbin while she was attempting to sell him a cigarette.

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on Wednesday remanded to prison Corbin, 47, of 128 Regent Street, shortly after she read the charge of simple larceny to him to which he pleaded not guilty.

It is alleged that on December 29, on Regent Street, Corbin stole a canvas bag valued $1, 000 and $25, 000 in cash from James’s stall.

James who was also present in court stated that on the day in question just after 4 that morning she was sleeping in her stall on Regent Street when Corbin, who lives a short distance from her stall, woke her up and requested a cigarette.

She said that as she was attempting to take out same from a pack, Corbin snatched her money bag containing the amount of money mentioned in the charge and started to run towards his house. James said she chased after him until she reached his yard but didn’t enter it since “he get some dogs that does even run de police”. She went on to say that as she called out to Corbin to give her back her money she realised that her efforts were in vain and soon went to the Brickdam Police Station where she made a report about the incident. Corbin was arrested and later charged with the offence.

However, Corbin refuted James’s claims. He said that he was not the one who had stolen the money nor did he know it was stolen.

Meanwhile, the prosecution stated that Corbin was before the court on another matter in the past and noted that none of the money or the bag was recovered.

The magistrate subsequently ordered that Corbin be remanded to prison and that he appear back in court on January 9.
