The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) yesterday commenced cleaning Le Repentir cemetery with the assistance of the Guyana Prison Service.
This newspaper visited the cemetery yesterday and observed a group of 10 prisoners clearing a section of the cemetery close to Savage Street, North East La Penitence. Yesterday they were working from the back of the cemetery in a westerly direction towards Vlissengen Road. They will be cleaning the area in sections heading west towards Princes Street.
The men will be assisted by an additional contingent of prisoners in the coming days and will be working daily between 7 am and 4 pm. Yesterday’s exercise started around 8 am and according to a prison official, the M&CC will make available equipment such as brush cutters and chainsaws to enable the prisoners to mow down thick bushes and trees found in the cemetery. The prisoners told this newspaper yesterday that when they are finished cleaning the area, the dead will then be able to rest in peace. (Photo by Alva Soloman)
