Celebrating International Literacy Day

Story telling was one of the main attractions yesterday as the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD) held a one-day book fair and exhibition at its headquarters in Kingston.
Nashrulla Khan, Head of the Literacy Unit at NCERD, said that the event was held to emphasize the importance of literacy and students and teachers from across the country attended.  Apart from the storytelling, there were exhibits of books as well as teaching aids for students at the different levels of the education system. Some of the popular bookstores within the city also had booths at the exhibition.
Earlier in the day, about 150 students from 25 schools between Plaisance and Buxton on the East Cost of Demerara participated in a special march and rally aimed at promoting literacy. This event was held as part of Region’s Four activities to commemorate International Literacy Day which was celebrated under the theme “The Power of Literacy.”
