District 13 schools in tight battle after field events

Track events on today at Camp Ayanganna

East Georgetown district powerhouses Tutorial High School (THS) and St. Joseph’s High School (SJHS) were locked in battle for supremacy at the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) Inter-Schools Track and Field championships which got underway at the GTU ground yesterday.

St. Joseph’s Ansa France was one of the standout athletes yesterday dominating the under-16 and under-20 javelin and discus events.

Her longest throw in the discus was 20.46m and she also placed second in the shot putt.
Her teammate, Stacy Gordon, ‘scissored’ her way to victory in the under-16 and under-20 (1.35m) high jump events.

On the male side, THS’s Maurice Gibson, continued his dominance in the boys’ under-20 high jump clearing 1.75m for the win.

In the male under-20 category, his counterpart Jamal Yarde was also outstanding copping the double in the discus (25.64m) and shot putt (10.25m) events.

The Whaul siblings, Lawanda (18.1m) and Akeeda (13.37m) won the under-12 and under-14 discus events respectively while SJHS’s Kayled Straughn won the boys’ under-14 discus event   with a throw of 25.3m.
Carlos Moore won the boys’ under-16 category with a throw of 21m.

In the boys’ under-14 high jump, THS’s Terry Dhanraj won by clearing 1.4m while on the distaff side Rowlessa Nurse of SJHS also cleared 1.4m to win that event. Michael Joseph won the under-16 category clearing 1.6m.

No long jump was done yesterday because of the heavy early morning rain but, according to district representative Andel Bethune, the long jump events will take place on Monday providing that the weather is favourable.

Meanwhile, the 12 schools will be participating in today’s track events at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ground at Camp Ayanganna from 09:30 hours.
